Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Has Rejected A Move To Chelsea

Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has turned down a cross-London move to Chelsea despite the two clubs agreeing a deal on Monday.

The England international was the subject of a £40m bid from the reigning Premier League champions this week, and once that offer had been accepted it seemed only a matter of time before the 24-year-old became Antonio Conte’s latest signing.

However, that will now not be happening, as BBC Sport have reported that Conte’s plan to use him at wing-back rather than his preferred position of central midfield was a key factor in his decision to ultimately reject the offer.

While this would ordinarily be good news for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, it’s being reported that Oxlade-Chamberlain still wants to leave the Emirates before Thursday, to join Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and play in midfield at Anfield.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal are prepared to do business with Liverpool – earlier reports had suggested that the Gunners were reluctant to sell to a direct rival for a Champions League spot – but if that mindset has shifted then Liverpool are prepared to enter the market for a player that Klopp rates. The alternative for the player appears to be riding this year out and leaving on a free transfer next summer.

It promises to be a manic last 48 hours of the transfer window as a number of deals come to a head, and all three of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea expected to be particularly busy.
