Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy could be set to leave Everton, due to a lack of first team football.
The Daily Mail is reporting that Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are readying bids for McCarthy, after he rejected a move to Sunderland.
He has been a pivotal part of Everton’s midfield since arriving from Wigan Athletic in 2013. However, he appears to have fallen down the pecking order recently. And following the signing of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United, he may find his opportunities reduced further.
McCarthy has made over 120 appearances in his time at Goodison Park, but only nine of those have come this season. The 26-year-old is desperate to play more and that could signal the end of his Everton career.
A move to struggling Sunderland didn’t seem to appeal to him, as he appears to have rejected David Moyes’ approach. There are now two other clubs apparently keen on securing his signature though, with differing challenges.
Crystal Palace are in danger of the drop themselves, but they may still be an exciting prospect. McCarthy would become a prominent part of their midfield and they could have a promising future. If they can maintain their Premier League status, the owners have plenty of cash to inject to take them to the next level.
Rumours of McCarthy moving to Palace are nothing new. Every transfer window brings more talk of a deal, although nothing has come of it as yet.
Another possible destination for McCarthy is Newcastle. Although a division lower they appear to be planning for a swift return to the top flight. They are tipped for promotion this season, so the midfielder may be willing to drop a level for a few months.
Ultimately, McCarthy will need to decide what’s best for his career. Choosing to stay at Everton would mean a fight for his place while joining Palace or Newcastle would result in more playing time, and a more important role, but at a lower level.
