God knows it has been a long, long summer for Nicolas Otamendi but the Argentinian finally got his move to the Premier League with Manchester City today, and he looks like an incredible player.
Having impressed with in the World Cup with Argentina, Otamendi had a stellar season with Spanish outfit Valencia, leading from the back in an impressive team to secure fourth place, which meant a spot in the Champions League qualifying round.
An incredible performance against Paraguay in June again caught the attention of Europe’s best, with Real Madrid and Manchester United both reportedly interested in the 27-year-old, but it was a move to another Manchester for the former Porto defender.
One of Manchester City’s main aims this season is to progress further in the Champions League, having been knocked out in the past two seasons to Barcelona, and the Citizen’s new signing certainly knows how to mark one Lionel Messi..
In a La Liga match between Valencia and Barcelona last campaign, the four-time Ballon d’Or winner ran at the Els Taronges defence, cutting in left and right to bamboozle the defenders.
However, his compatriot was simply having absolutely none of it, staying with Messi before taking the ball away from his feet just as the Barca star was ready to unleash a ferocious shot.
Otamendi was named in the La Liga team of the year ahead of the likes of Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique in his debut season in Spain, following an £8.5m move from FC Porto where he won a hat trick of titles, including the Europa League.
He certainly knows where the goal is too, with this bullet header against Real Madrid, which ended Los Blancos 22-match unbeaten streak.
This certainly looks like shrewd business by Manuel Pellegrini, despite the £32m price tag.
