Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar saw red in bizarre fashion on Sunday night, as tempers flared in his side’s 2-2 draw at Marseille.
The 25-year-old has made a strong start to life at the Parc des Prince since making a world-record €220m move from Barcelona this past summer (and even scored PSG’s opening goal just after the half-hour mark) but has now hit his first major speedbump in France.
With Unai Emery’s reigning champions staring down the barrel of their first defeat of the season and with just several minutes remaining on the clock, the Brazilian forward became embroiled in a scuffle with Marseille winger Lucas Ocampos right in front of the referee.
Visibly frustrated with what he perceived as an overly rough tackle from his opponent, Neymar squared up to Ocampos – only for the former Monaco man to hit the deck theatrically in response.
Both players were shown yellow cards for the incident, but because Neymar had already been booked two minutes earlier, he was shown a second and sent off with his team still trailing 2-1 at the Velodrome.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, however, PSG were still able to rescue a point from the game as an Edinson Cavani free kick levelled the score at 2-2 deep into injury time.
