Manchester United are intent on making a big name summer signing to continue their progress under Jose Mourinho with a host of star names continuing to be linked to the club.
Spanish newspaper Sport report Barcelona star Neymar is the latest target, claiming the Brazilian’s agent has met with Manchester United officials who are willing to offer the player £415,000-a-week and trigger his mammoth £173 million (€200m) release clause, which will leave Barcelona with a difficult decision to make.
The 25-year-old is eager to step out of the shadow of Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou and knows a move to a new club is the only realistic way he can do so to finally achieve his dream of winning the Ballon d’Or.
Neymar has spoken of his desire (via The Sun) to one day move to the Premier League, and named Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola as two managers he could see himself playing under, should he swap La Liga for the Premier League.
“The Premier League is a championship that amazes me.
“I like the playing style and the teams. And who knows, someday, I would like to play at it, yes.
“I admire Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool — these are the teams that are always there fighting.
“And then you have high-level coaches like Mourinho and Guardiola . These are coaches with whom any player would like to work.”
Champions League qualification is thought to be a deal-breaker in any mooted deal, with the Old Trafford club still outside the top four in the Premier League.
With games running out, the Europa League may be the club’s best chance of qualifying for Europe’s most prestigious competition and in turn attract Europe’s top players.
United showed last summer that money is no object with the £89 million signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus. With players like Antoine Griezmann, and now Neymar, continuing to be linked to the club, chances are United will break their club record fee again this summer one way or another.
