Manchester United legend Gary Neville has called on Anthony Martial to start fulfilling his potential at Old Trafford.
The French international came off the bench to score the winner in Man United’s 1-0 Premier League victory against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday – and while Neville hailed that important goal, he feels that Martial not giving 100% all the time is holding him back.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Gary Neville Podcast after the victory, the former Valencia called on Martial to step up nd become the payer that he threatened to be when he first arrived in England in 2015:
“It’s been a stop-start Manchester United career for Martial.
“For someone of his talent, he should be tearing this league apart with his ability. He’s lost his place in the France squad – there’s obviously something wrong with him.
“Mourinho and the French manager has turned off of him a little bit. You always get the feeling he’s playing at 85 per cent. If he showed that extra 15 per cent, then he could do anything. He’s got everything you’d want: composure in front of goal, great skill, pace, strength, but what is that little bit missing?
“He’s worth £50million and with that talent, he’s got to step up. He scores in big games, he takes big moments on and obviously has the temperment to play in big games. But come on, let’s see it every single week.
“He could be a player that could score 20 goals in 20 games if he really wanted to and strived to be the best.”
Martial has started in just three of Man United’s opening ten Premier League games as he battles with Marcus Rashford for that spot on the left side in Jose Mourinho’s forward line. A return of four goals from that situation is promising, however, and contributions like on Saturday can only aid his cause further.
