Jose Mourinho has completed a U-turn with regard his views on his left-back Luke Shaw.

In recent weeks, Mourinho went to extreme lengths to criticise the 21-year-old defender. The Manchester United manager openly slated him at press conferences, explaining to the media his displeasure at the way Shaw was applying himself in training and slamming his attitude.

The Portuguese said that Shaw’s work-rate and ambition was lacking severely in comparison with others competing for a slot in United’s defence.

The Old Trafford boss has changed his tune as of last night, after the Europa League quarter-final extra-time win over Anderlecht. Mourinho now claims the ex-Southampton player has won him over.

The three-time Premier League winning manager now insists that Shaw has done enough to earn his trust. The strong mentality that Mourinho looks for in his players has now shone through in Shaw. The England international did vow to prove his manager wrong and show that he has what it takes to make it at United, and that is exactly what he did.

Speaking after the game on Thursday night (in which Shaw played the full 120 minutes), Mourinho was happy to heap praise on the young defender:

“I always trust the players with special mentality. Always trust them. Luke Shaw did something new today, it means a lot for me.”
