Despite his prodigious talent and stunning first season, Jose Mourinho has never quite been Anthony Martial’s biggest fan since he took over at Manchester United.

Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were all above the Frenchman in the pecking order last term and he started just 18 games in the Premier League. In those matches, he notched four goals and six assists.

Throughout the summer, there have been widespread suggestions the 21-year-old could be loaned out for the upcoming campaign and was even reported to be part of a deal that would bring Ivan Perisic to Old Trafford.

So despite his fine pre-season form, there was growing fear among supporters that Mourinho would show the winger the door before the end of this transfer window. However, the Portuguese has now confirmed Martial is indeed in his plans. When asked about the attacker’s future, he remarked:

“Everybody’s in the plan — the plan is to have a good squad, not a good team, a good squad with options.

“And we have important players injured for a long time, they’re going to be back just by the end of the year, so our squad is not so big.”

The former Monaco man set up Juan Mata’s winner in United’s final friendly game in Dublin last night after a mazy run on the left wing. His consistent showings in the buildup to the new campaign may just have earned him a start in next week’s UEFA Super Cup.

The Reds take on Champions League winners Real Madrid in Skopje next Tuesday.
