Mourinho Comments From 2004 Get Dredged Up After United’s Champions League Exit

Some Jose Mourinho comments after a Porto victory over Manchester United have come back to bite him…

When Manchester United were drawn against Sevilla in the last 16 of the Champions League, fans and pundits alike believed that it was nigh on a certainty that the Red Devils would be waltzing into the quarterfinals.

However, after Jose Mourinho’s men managed a meagre four shots on target in 180 minutes of football against a side that are placed in fifth position in the La Liga table, the Manchester United manager bizarrely elected to suggest that the defeat was somewhat normal for the Old Trafford side.

“That is not the end of the world. I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and I knock Man United out at home at Old Trafford,” he told reporters on Tuesday evening.

“I sit in this chair with Porto, Man United out, I sit in this chair with Real Madrid, Man United out. So is not something new for the club and of course being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment, obviously.”

However, despite his insistence that United should simply brush over their woeful performances vs Sevilla, Oliver Kay from The Times has now dredged up some comments from Mourinho himself explaining why they should do anything but.

Discussing Porto’s victory against United in the first leg, the ‘Special One’ said that he understood Fergie’s anger when the Scotsman refused to shake his hand.

“I understand why Ferguson is a bit emotional,” the then Porto manager said. “He has some top players in the world and they should be doing a lot better than that. You would be really sad if your team gets as clearly dominated as that by an opponent who has been built on maybe ten percent of the budget.”

Manchester United now face Brighton in what will be a massive FA Cup clash this weekend with the Red Devils now out of contention in every other competition.
