The summer transfer window has only just closed but Manchester United are not sitting back on the plaudits they have received for their swift transfer action in recent months, with plans already in the pipeline for the January window.

According to The Manchester Evening News, José Mourinho has his sights set on recruiting two further defenders early next year – Fabinho of Monaco and long-term United target Raphael Varane, who plies his trade with Real Madrid.

Both men played under the Portuguese during his time in Spain, and their connections with their former boss could sway in the Red Devils’ favour should they become available.

The club kept tabs on players this summer with rumours on deadline day that the Monaco right back was on his way to Old Trafford. Mourinho is, however, prepared to wait to get his man with Antonio Valencia starring in a full back role so far this season and back up Matteo Darmian waiting in reserve should he be needed.

Monaco’s progression to the Champions League groups stages proved too much for Fabinho to turn down with United competing in the Europa League, which came to the delight of Monaco who had little interest in selling the 22-year-old.

United’s interest in Varane dates back to 2011 though when the French defender turned them down in favour of a move to Real Madrid. The club were looking to add to their centre backs over the summer with a move for José Fonte of Southampton also failing to come off.

However, Eric Bailly, a summer recruit from Villarreal, has surprised Mourinho and United fans with his excellent start to the season alongside Daley Blind. With Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo still at the club, the manager was willing to wait to try once more for Varane in the next window after the defender was convinced to stay at Real Madrid by manager Zinedine Zidane.

United fans are currently on cloud nine after their impressive start to the season with the additions of Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba enjoying a positive start to life at Old Trafford with the clubs fans excited to see what Mourinho can do once again when the next window opens for business as the club aim to regain their throne as champions of England.
