The Mixer Football Podcast: Joe Gamble Joins Us To Talk League Of Ireland And Preview Ireland V Austria

Republic of Ireland Soccer Training Portugal 22/5/2006 Ireland Joe Gamble

The latest edition of the Mixer Irish Football Podcast looked at the state of play in the League of Ireland title race, as well as previewing Ireland’s upcoming clash against Austria.

Cork City moved a huge step closer to securing their first Premier Division title in over a decade with a comprehensive 3-0 win at closest rivals (and defending champions) Dundalk on Friday night. Sean Maguire proved to be the hero once again with a superb hat-trick, but news broke less than 24 hours later that he would be moving to Preston North End – and he may be taking teammate Kevin O’Connor with him.

With their latest win, Cork moved to 18 points clear at the top of the table so the question had to be asked: is the title race over already?

Former Cork City midfielder Joe Gamble, now strength and conditioning coach at Limerick and still the last Lague of Ireland-based footballer to player for Ireland, joined us on the line to discuss why domestic players find it so hard to break into the national side, as well as his current role at Markets Field and his coaching plans for the future.

Finally, we looked ahead to Ireland’s World Cup qualifier this Sunday, in a game that will have huge consequences for the Boys in Green and their hope to be in Russia next summer.
