Mesut Ozil Insists Young Arsenal Team-Mate Is A Mix Of These Two Football Greats

Being compared to some of footballs biggest names is always nice. When it is your team-mate, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil no less, making the comparison, you know you are doing something right.

Arsenal’s star midfielder and assist king has claimed that young team-mate Alex Iwobi reminds him of a blend of Netherlands legend Edgar Davids and former Botlon Wanderers Jay Jay Okocha.

The 20-year-old winger is enjoying an impressive start to the new season and fast becoming an automatic name on Arsène Wenger’s match day team sheet.

According to the Daily Mail, Ozil has been mightily impressed with his new midfield partner and has made the flattering comparison to Davids and Okocha in advance of the Gunners’ midweek Champions League clash with Basel,

Alex reminds me of a mixture of him (Okocha) and Edgar Davids. He’s really strong on the ball, also defensively, but he’s good in front of goal too.”

“He’s developing really well and if he continues the way he’s been playing for the whole season, he will enhance his game. The manager knows exactly how good he is and I wish him all the best.”

Coming from a world class World Cup winning colleague, this is certainly high praise and puts into the spotlight just how promising a player Iwobi is.

Arsenal v Chelsea - Premier League

The young Nigeria international has been with Arsenal since 2004 when he was part of the club’s youth system. Promotion to the senior squad came in 2013 and this season sees him begin to cement his place in the starting XI.

Having previously played for England’s under age teams, it was his uncle, none other than the man he has been compared to, Jay Jay Okocka, that convinced him to declare for his native Nigeria, where he has gone on to represent the African nation six times since 2015.

With four starts and three assists already this season, the opportunity now exists for the young winger to make the position his own, an impressive achievement in a talent laden midfield roster at the Emirates.
