As Manchester United prepare to welcome a new number seven, their last one is continuing to resurrect his career in Ligue 1.
Memphis Depay had an ill-fated 18-month spell at Old Trafford, but his move to Lyon in January 2017 seems to have been the catalyst for him to start recapture some of the form that made the Premier League side take a chance on him in the first place.
On Sunday night, he took his form to a new level as he fired in a long-range belter in injury time as his side dramatically felled league leaders Paris Saint-Germain at the Groupama Stadium.
Collecting the ball on the edge of the PSG box, Memphis collected the ball, sidestepped Giovani Lo Celso as if he wasn’t even there, and unleashed a power drive in to the far corer, leaving visiting goalkeeper Alphonse Areola rooted to the spot as the ball sailed past him.
The clash had already seen its fair share of drama even before it was settled by a late winner. Nabil Fekir had given Lyon the lead withing the first three minutes before Layvin Kurzawa equalised deep into first-half injury time. PSG were later reduced to ten men when Dani Alves was sent off just before he hour mark, and Kylian Mbappe had to be stretchered off and replaced with Julian Draxler.
Lyon’s dramatic 2-1 victory narrows the gap on PSG at the top of Ligue 1, with eight points now the difference between the two sides at the summit.
