Jose Mourinho has been busy offloading players from his over inflated squad with Memphis Depay one of the unlucky few who have already been shown the exit.
Speaking on the multiple departures last week, Mourinho spoke glowingly of a player he rarely used, yet greatly admired.
The Manchester United boss has first option on Memphis Depay should he depart new club Lyon in the future and Mourinho is glad the club have the opportunity to do so.
“He didn’t succeed in this 18 months, I would say, but he is very young so I think it is important for the club to keep control of this talent,”
“And we all wish that he plays very, very well at Olympique Lyon, and why not to come back because everyone here likes him.”
As reported in the Manchester Evening News, Depay today responded to the quotes from his former manager.
“His words were nice,” he told OL TV in France.
“In Manchester, I always worked as I had to. For me personally, it wasn’t all that easy, I needed to play. But we didn’t have a bad relationship.
“He’s a great coach and a great person. Now we’ll see here how I play. In any case, I think he has said good things about me.”
The door has been left open for the player to return after signing under previous boss Louis Van Gaal in the summer of 2015. The young Dutch International found it hard to adjust to the pressure of playing for one of the world’s greatest clubs and being part of a large squad.
A prolific goalscorer with PSV Eindoven, Depay only managed two goals during his 18 months at Old Trafford.
The 22 year old was not selected by Van Gaal for the trip to Wembley where Manchester United beat Crystal Palace in the FA cup final last season and he only featured eight times this campaign under Mourinho making just one start.
He will be hoping his £21.6m move to France can help him rediscover the form he showed in the World Cup 2014 that helped launch him to worldwide attention.
