Jose Mourinho’s rebuilding process is well under way at Old Trafford, with three signings – Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly – all confirmed to be joining Manchester United this summer.
However, with Mourinho being proactive early on in the transfer window and looking to build his United side, it’s believed some players will depart, with the 53-year-old expected to jettison several misfits through the Old Trafford exit door this summer.
One player who may be shown that very door is Memphis Depay, after a disappointing first season in England.
The Express reports that reigning Serie A champions Juventus would be willing to sign the Dutch international despite the player’s poor debut season in English football, as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
The 22-year-old winger arrived at United last summer in a £25 million deal, having scored an impressive 28 goals in all competitions for PSV Eindhoven the season before.
The move saw Memphis link up with then United manager Louis van Gaal, who had given the youngster his international debut aged just 19.
High expectations were placed on the youngster, with Depay being handed the iconic number 7 shirt, previously worn by club legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Dutchman failed to live up to the hype, managing a meagre seven goals in 47 appearances for the Red Devils, and failing to adapt to the cut and thrust of the Premier League.
With Memphis suffering a difficult first season in England, it remains to be seen whether new United manager Mourinho retains the 22-year-old or if he decides to cash in, especially with Juventus offering a potential escape route.
