Arsenal midfield star Mesut Ozil has finally given the biggest indication yet that he wishes to remain at the Emirates beyond his current deal, but has also revealed it comes with one massive clause.
According to The Guardian, the Germany international is keen to sign a new contract with the Gunners but before he does, he wants to know if manager Arsène Wenger plans to stay on or not beyond his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.
Still with almost 18 months remaining on his current deal, Ozil has been the subject of much speculation since the summer and with contract extension negotiations ongoing, it has long been hoped he would choose to remain.
For his part, Ozil is clear,
“I am very, very happy at Arsenal and have let the club know that I would be ready to sign a new contract. The fans want that I stay and now it is just down to the club.
“The club knows that I am here most of all because of Arsène Wenger. He is the one who signed me and he is the one whose trust I have. The club also knows that I want to be clear what the manager is going to [in the future].”
With news that Wenger’s future will likely be the deciding factor in his decision, some fans will now be of two minds over what should happen next. Having started the season so strongly, the Gunners have fallen off the pace of late and are now down to fifth in the Premier League table, some eight points behind leaders Chelsea and only two points ahead of the in-form Manchester United.
As a result of the recent run of poor form, the #WengerOut brigade has struck up a chord once more on social media. Ozil’s admission now will likely temper this sentiment somewhat as while they may want the veteran Frenchman to leave, the same cannot be said for the 28-year-old German.
