Cork City Could Be Without Goalkeeper Mark McNulty For Legia Warsaw Clash

Cork City could be without goalkeeper Mark McNulty for Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw.

The veteran stopper had come off injured in the closing stages of Friday night’s Premier Divison clash with Shamrock Rovers, to be replaced by Peter Cherrie in what was his league debut for the Leesiders.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s match at Turner’s Cross, City manager John Caulfield has said that they will give McNulty every chance of playing in the first leg, right up until the last minute before the team has to be finalised:

“We’re going to give him right until the end. It’s a tough one. He wants to play. He has improved dramatically. Great healer. But at the same time, we’re going to wait until tomorrow to see.

“While it’s a huge game and Mark obviously wants to play, at the end of the day we can’t play him if he’s not 100% and if there are any setbacks. We’ll monitor it with the physios tomorrow.”

To say that McNulty missing a competitive fixture for Cork City would be something of an understatement. The 37-year-old has been almost an ever-present in the City nets for the best part of a decade. Should he miss out, however, Cherrie has a wealth of experience in domestic and European football and would be a more than capable replacement.

City could also be without Garry Buckley for the clash, with the midfielder having to receive a number of stitches after sustaining a blow to the head in last weekend’s stalemate.
