James McClean has quite spectacularly responded to Paul Kimmage’s criticism of him receiving the RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year award.
Speaking on the Last Word on Today FM, the Irish journalist was critical of both the voting process and the fact that the West Brom man had picked up the accolade.
“It’s astonishing. Everybody likes him. I love his commitment to the team. I love the way he plays for Ireland,” Kimmage said.
“It is great that you acknowledge his contribution but by no means is he the Sportstar of the Year.
“Nobody agrees, other than James’ parents, that James McClean is the Sportstar of the Year.”
Clearly irked by the Sunday Independent journalist’s remarks, the former Derry City player has responded to Kimmage, who he describes as ‘some journalist’.
While McClean backs up his tweet by pointing out that it was a public vote which he in fact won, Kimmage opined that the award is simply a ‘popularity contest’.
Either way, this is not likely to be the end of this war of words.
