James McClean Closing In On £6m Championship Switch

James McClean’s West Bromwich Albion career looks set to come to an end in the very near future.

The Irish international arrived at Stoke City’s Clayton Wood training ground on Friday morning, with a view to completing a £5m (plus an additional £1m in add-ons) move to the fellow Championship side as per regional outlets Stoke Sentinel and Express and Star.

Assuming the medical and contract negotiations all go to plan, McClean will make the move to the Bet365 Stadium well ahead of the new league season. In doing so, manager Gary Rowett will finally land one of his prime targets – even dating back to when he tried to sign the former Sunderland winger for his old club Derby County back in January.

McClean’s relationship with West Browm soured this summer as it became evident that he wanted to move on. The 29-year-old skipped the side’s pre-season training camp in Scotland without permission – for which he was sanctioned – and from that point on it always looked as though he would get his wish and be allowed to depart the Hawthorns.

The two clubs had been deadlocked on an appropriate fee, but it now seems that the way is clear for the ex-Derry City man to join his new club.

McClean, assuming the deal goes through, will join up with fellow new signings Peter Ebeto, Benik Afobe and Adam Federici (with Thomas Ince seemingly likely to follow) as Stoke adjust to like if the second tier for the first time in a decade.
