The build up to Manchester United’s game away to Watford on Saturday afternoon focused on the absence of Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.
Today’s news, however, indicates that the medical staff at United will be working overtime over the next couple of days, with as many as ten players in doubt or definitely out for this week’s Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven.
Along with Martial and the club’s skipper missing last Saturday, United had to plan without Marouane Fellaini, James Wilson, Michael Carrick and long-term absentees Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw.
The Manchester Evening News report that while United remain hopeful that Rooney, Juan Mata (who picked up an injury against Watford) and Martial could feature at Old Trafford this week, both Ander Herrera and Phil Jones are now expected to be unavailable for the midweek fixture having picked up knocks against the Hornets.
This injury crisis could never have come at a good time for a club competing on so many fronts but with a European game to come on Wednesday before two tough Premier League matches against high flyers Leicester City and West Ham, United are being hit at a less than convenient point in time.
Louis van Gaal’s side have proved their mettle already this season and will need to exhume every ounce of resilience to come out of this spell unscathed. If they do that, though, the new year will look very promising indeed.
