Manchester United are set to confirm in the coming days that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a new contract and will return to the first team when he’s fully fit.
It was reported by ESPN on Sunday night that the Swede would this week put pen to paper on a new deal as he continues his accelerated comeback from injury. The 35-year-old ruptured his ACL and PCL in April during his side’s Europa League quarter-final win over Anderlecht.
It was feared by some at the time, such was the severity of the injury, that he may never play again. However, the forward has raced through his rehab and – judging by what he’s posting on social media – is rapidly approaching full fitness.
The news of his return and the number he’ll be wearing has just been confirmed by Adidas. On their US store website, “Ibrahimovic 10” shirts are now available.
It’s not massively surprising he’s going to don the famed number 10 shirt having worn it at several clubs throughout his career. Wayne Rooney vacated it this summer when he left for Everton.
Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals last season as he spearheaded the Reds attack for much of the campaign.
Not all United fans, however, are over the moon about Zlatan’s return. He did miss countless big chances over the course of his stay and his undeniable immobility often made the side very one-dimensional in attack.
