Manchester United completed the signing of the versatile Dutch international Daley Blind on Monday for £14m and Van Gaal is set to use former Ajax man in a midfield role according to the 24-year-old’s agent, Rob Jansen.
Blind’s agent has hinted that Van Gaal has told the 24-year-old that he will play in a midfield role with speaking about his clients move.
“Daley will play in the first team in the centre of midfield. Then it’s up to him if he stays there.”
Blind did impress in a left back role for the Netherlands but it is believed that his performances in the middle of midfield for Ajax are the reason that Van Gaal has recruited the the 24-year-old.
Van Gaal spoke of his delight after securing the signature of a player he managed at this years World Cup.
“I am delighted Daley has signed for the club.
“He is a very intelligent and versatile footballer that can play in many positions.
“Daley is a great reader of the game, he has played under my philosophy over a number of years and he will be a great addition to the team.”
Blind has the ability to read the game and with United currently lacking a deep lying midfield player to orchestrate attacks, Blind is now likely to play in his favored position, where he will be expected to add greater quality to this current United midfield which has struggled in their opening Premier League games.
The 24-year-old does not possess the pace for a wing back role and with Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo capable of playing there expect Blind to feature in midfield for Louis Van Gaal’s side in the long term.
However, with Rojo failing to secure a work permit and with Luke Shaw out through injury Blind may be used in a wing back role against QPR. The player is renowned in his homeland as a quality central midfield player.
The Dutch international played the majority of his football last season in that position and was awarded the accolade of Dutch Footballer of the Year for the 2013/14 season.
Blind spoke of his delight at securing a move to Old Trafford and linking up with Louis Van Gaal.
“It is a real honour to sign for Manchester United. I have been at Ajax since I was seven years old and I will always have very fond memories of the club and of my time there.
“Louis van Gaal is a tremendously talented coach, I have worked with him at Ajax and also for the Netherlands national team and I cannot wait to work with him at the biggest club in the world.”
The 24-year-old may have impressed in a left wing back role for the Netherlands but it is certaintl not the former Ajax’s mans natural position. Expect Blind to play in a defensive midfield role and use his ability to read the game and add more control to a United midfield.
Blind’s future undoubtedly lies in the central midfield area.
