Manchester United fans are waiting with bated breath to see who Louis Van Gaal will sign this January. The club were struggling for goals and have been tight defensively in recent weeks.
When they met goal-shy Newcastle United last night in the Premier League, logic dictated that it would be a drab affair.
Naturally, it finished 3-3.
Despite failing to find a win, many fans were happy with the way LVG’s side performed and pressed forward.
While there is little doubt that they need to sign a striker to ease the burden on Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial, there is also talk that they need a midfielder.
Today The Independent are reporting that the Red Devils are hot in pursuit of Portugal international Andre Gomes.
The 22 year-old enjoyed a successful career with Benfica, before going on loan to Valencia last season, where he made 33 appearances. He then joined the Spanish club on a permanent basis, but this season has not been as fruitful and the player’s agent is desperate to get his client a big money move to England.
Gomes has been impressing on the field, and looks set to be a central figure as Portugal make a tilt for the European Championships this summer.
While Gomes is looking for a move away Valencia, a switch to Old Trafford would certainly be bolstered with the current relationship between the two clubs.
Former United stalwart Gary Neville is manager of the La Liga side, and would be happy to open the dialogue between the two sides.
Gomes would add intensity to the United midfield, and could give Van Gaal’s side the impetus to go on and mount a title challenge in the coming months.
