Manchester United are in need of another defensive signing and Atletico Madrid’s Miranda could be just the man, with Chelsea also interested.
Atletico Madrid are interested in Juan Mata and the Spain international could become part of a swap deal in January if he is deemed surplus to requirements by Louis Van Gaal. The Madrid club are insisting they will not lower their valuation of £24 million for Miranda, according to the Daily Express.
Juan Mata could see his game time at United decreased in the coming season such is the quality of the midfield following the marquee signings that Van Gaal has made during the summer. Ander Herrera, Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind all give the 26-year-old stiff competition in United’s midfield and with such defensive worries now prevalent a swap for a defender could see Mata going to Spain.
For Mata on a personal level this could be a good move. He would still be moving to a very big club with the title of Spanish champions. This move would give Mata a chance to get plenty of first team football whereas at United it looks as though his time on the pitch could be quite limited.
Miranda, as the other side of this rumoured deal, would instil a lot of experience and leadership into the squad – two characteristics missing in abundance in United’s loss to Leicester City last weekend. The Brazilian international has a lot of European and Champions League experience with the Spanish champions. He played in 32 La Liga matches and 13 Champions League games last term.
Experience of defending at the highest level of European football is certainly something the United fans will be craving following the embarrassing defensive exploits on show so far this season.
Mata leaving may not dent their midfield options too badly. He has a lot of talent but looking at the current midfield that Van Gaal has to choose from it may be best for the player to seek opportunities elsewhere.
