It appears José Mourinho continues to see the light as Manchester United look set to bolster their ailing midfield and give up the notion that Wayne Rooney and/or Marouane Fellaini can play in midfield.
Highly-rated 22-year-old Tiemoue Bakayoko, who plays for AS Monaco, has been earmarked as the next addition to their ranks, according to The Sun.
Presumably this would mean that Mourinho has relented with the idea of £89 million man Paul Pogba playing in a slightly deeper role than he had been used to at Juventus. This tactic succeeded in accommodating Rooney and Fellaini in the side but did not get the best out of the talismanic Frenchman in the early games.
Now though, it seems that last week’s 4-1 romp against defending champions Leicester City, where Pogba was unleashed up the field with Rooney and Fellaini dropping to the bench, has convinced Mourinho to carry on with this set-up.
While Ander Herrera played well in that game and provided some much needed spark and energy around the middle of the park, United may well still be exposed in midfield as they lack some physicality against superior opposition. With Morgan Schneiderlin continuing to fail to provide this essential aspect of the game it seems Mourinho has turned his attention to Bakayoko to add some steel to United’s midfield.
That is not to say that Bakayoko is simply just a stopper as any highlights video of the Monaco man routinely demonstrates him effortlessly bursting past would-be tacklers in a fashion similar to that of his compatriot Pogba or even Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.
His spectacular style of play has drawn a lot of interest as it is reported that United face stiff competition to secure his signature from the likes of Juventus as well as other Premier League sides in West Brom, Stoke City and Southampton. At just 22, himself and Pogba could form a formidable midfield partnership for the next decade or so.
