Watch: Manchester United Players Show The Shoddy Condition Rostov’s Pitch Is In

Manchester United

Manchester United are due to face FC Rostov in the Europa League last 32 on Thursday night, but the pitch could prove to be as much of a challenge as the opposition.

Manager José Mourinho has already voiced his concerns that the pitch could pose a threat to his players, and judging by the inspection from some of his players on Wednesday morning then it seems that he is entirely right to be worried.

Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Juan Mata were among the players testing out the  Olimp-2 surface, and what they found was a particularly hard pitch…

Despite the fact that Rostov have already agreed not to train on the pitch ahead of the tie in order to reduce the risk of further damage, instead finding a nearby alternative, Mourinho is still highly unlikely to take risks when it comes to selecting his starting lineup.

Top of that list is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian international has just come back from injury having missed the last two matches, and while he has been included in the travelling party, it would be a massive surprise to see him involved unless absolutely necessary, and the chances of the forward starting in Russia are surely practically non-existent.

The travelling squad (named above) suggests that Mourinho’s starting eleven will at least be competitive but, having seen the playing surface his team must now play on, it remains to be seen if some of the more important players (e.g. Ibrahimovic, Pogba, even De Gea) will be risked from the start or named on the bench – particularly with an important FA Cup quarter-final clash against Chelsea to come at Stamford Bridge next Monday evening.
