Manchester United were among the biggest spenders in the summer transfer window, and that is set to continue in January.

With £30m spent on Eric Bailly in the summer, Man United are set to sign a long-term defensive partner for the Ivorian in the form of Swedish international centre-back Victor Lindelof.

In fact, so far along are negotiations that Portuguese publications Record and A Bola are reporting that a £38m deal for the 22-year-old is to be finalised in the next few days.

The latter allege that Lindelof “practically has both feet out of Lisbon” ahead of the deal, which they claim could cost Man United as much as £50m including clauses and add-ons.

However, they close with the caveat of stating that Lindelof will remain at Benfica for the remainder of the season before joining his new teammates in the summer. How accurate that turns out to be remains to be seen.

Record make no mention of Lindelof potentially staying at the Stadium of Light until the summer, but do allege that the player himself expects the transfer to be finalised in the coming days or weeks.

O Jogo add more fuel to the fire by claiming that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has flown to England with agent Jorge Mendes in order to finalise the terms of the sale. They don’t go so far as to say that an agreement has been struck, but appear very confident that it will be.

On the English side, Sky Sports have confirmed that talks between the two clubs have taken place, but also err on the side of nothing official being set in stone yet.

Despite José Mourinho’s earlier insistence that he would not look to add to his squad in January, it seems to be only a matter of time before VIctor Lindelof becomes the club’s latest big-money signing.
