According to reports in Italy young Manchester United midfielder Davide Petrucci has terminated his contract as he looks to seal a move to Romanian club Cluj.
Highly respected Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio broke the story and there looks set to be more departures at Old Trafford following a number of outgoings in recent weeks with Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez, Shinji Kagawa and Tom Cleverley just four of the more high profile players to be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
The Italian midfielder joined United from Roma as a 16-year-old and had been tipped to breakthrough to the first team at Old Trafford, however despite impressing at reserve level he has failed to make an appearance with the United first team and at the age of 21 looks to set to move to Romania.
The young Italian has earned two caps at U19 level for Italy but has failed to impress in loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United.
The Italian’s move from Rome to Manchester in 2008 was clouded with controversy with the Italian club unhappy to see their youth star at the time leave for England.
A local newspaper in Rome at the time had described the transfer as a nightmare for the Serie A Club.
“Manchester United have dealt us another low blow, stealing Petrucci from under our noses, probably the best product of our youth system. In three to four years, he will be worth 100 times as much.”
Petrucci had been compared to Fernando Totti but he has struggled to develop into the player that many had hoped at Manchester United.
The 22-year-old had been included in Louis Van Gaal’s 25-man squad earlier this week but with United knocked out of the Capital One Cup he is unlikely to see much game time and at the age of twenty two he would have to be one of three over age players permitted to play in the U21 Premier League.
Petrucci looks set to end his six-year stay at the Red Devils where he failed to establish himself as a first team player and a move to Cluj should help the Italian rejuvenate his career.
