Manchester United have made a massive €85 million (£60m) bid for Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller, according to reports.
Rumours had circulated last week that United were to make a €70 million offer for the Germany international, however now Sport Bild claim that the Old Trafford outfit made a colossal €85 million bid for the 25-year-old last week, breaking Angel Di Maria’s transfer record.
Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has stood firm that ‘there is no price’ for Muller, however this substantial bid will surely rock the boat of those holding the purse strings at the Bavarian club.
Muller, who has represented Germany over 60 times already and amassed 21 goals in all competitions last season could be a stellar addition to United’s attack. He will also alleviate some of the pressure which Wayne Rooney has come under for what many have deemed below par performances already this season.
Muller’s record when it comes to goals is not outstanding but what he crucially adds to his team is the ability to set-up those around him as well as hit the back of the net on occasion himself.
United fans are expecting a big-name signing to come to Old Trafford this summer and Muller may just be that man, particularly with Chelsea said to be in pursuit of United target Pedro.
The Daily Mail report that United are still the frontrunners for the Spain international, however Chelsea are ready to challenge this current situation, with Roman Abramovich in particular said to be a fan of the attacker.
Manchester City will also join the race for Pedro should anything scupper their deal for Kevin De Bruyne.
So, it looks like it’s a case of signing Muller for a record-breaking £60 million or acquiring Pedro. The latter is at this moment in time the more plausible option due to Pedro’s lack of playing time and a very public knowledge of a potential transfer, however Muller and his club could be tempted by what is clearly a sizeable offer.
