Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has been given more funds to improve his side in this January’s transfer window and it now looks as though United are set to make a £51 million bid for two Juventus players; midfielder Arturo Vidal and centre back Angelo Ogbonna, according to reports in Italy.
Metro reports that United will make an offer ‘imminently’ and that they hope to ‘agree a deal in principle’ so the players can come to Manchester on the first of January.
Speculation has been ongoing surrounding a possible Vidal transfer but Ogbonna now also looks a likely target for the Red Devils also. It is no surprise that Van Gaal wishes to improve his defence following quite a leakage of goals in the early periods of the season.
A 2-1 win over West Ham last weekend when down to ten men shows indications of improvement but a player such as Vidal who can defend his back four against attacks is something very much needed. Although Daley Blind could play this role as well; Vidal at the age of 27 has enough experience to do a great defensive job for United as well as link up with attacks if needed.
Ogbonna at the age of 26 has slightly less experience and has only played 16 times in Serie A last season. This term however he has made five appearances already and Van Gaal could be recruiting a player reaching his prime with many more years of top flight football left in him.
Defensive signings are what is clearly needed at Old Trafford following the massive additions they have made in forward areas. There is a lot to be straightened out at United between now and January but if this Juventus duo are to come to United it is certainly a big step in the right direction.
