Manchester United Legend Scholes Doesn’t Hold Back When Analysing Ireland-England Game

Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes was never one to hold back on the pitch and today he translated that no-nonsense attitude to the ITV match day studio, where he provided a rather unvarnished analysis of the friendly game between Ireland and England.

The Manchester United veteran wasn’t impressed in what was a lacklustre game with a minimal number of goalmouth incidents.

During the post-match analysis, the 40-year-old gave his honest opinion of what he had just seen.

“There was a real lack of quality and a waste of an afternoon.”

“It was an end-of-season waste of space.”

It’s hard to argue with the former England international as both sides looked lethargic after a long season and, as noted by the ITV commentary team, maybe fears of injury ahead of next week’s crucial qualifiers had a part to play.

Speaking of those qualifiers, Ireland play Scotland this coming Saturday at 6pm in an attempt to leapfrog the Scottish into third place behind Germany and Poland. It is a huge game for Ireland, who know a loss could put an end to realistic hopes of qualifying.

England sit in a much more comfortable position at the top of their group, with a healthy six-point lead at the top over their opponents this weekend, Slovenia.

Let’s just hope this weekend’s games don’t end up being another ‘waste of an afternoon’.
