In a fascinating article published by Squawka, former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has spoken out about Manchester United’s decision to appoint Jose Mourinho as the new boss at Old Trafford.
There has been much speculation over how Mourinho , the former manager of one of United’s great rivals Chelsea, would fare partnering up with the Red Devils and this report has seemed to add another chapter to whats turning out to be a controversial tale.
Hargreaves told the webiste, “Mourinho is at Manchester United because Pep is at City”. The former English midfielder hinting that Mourinho may not have been the number one choice for Ed Woodward Executive vice -chairman of the club.
Possibly United wanted Pep Guardiola, the former Barcelona boss, who’s team tore United apart in the 2011 Champions League Final.
Hargreaves also made the comment, “United were not completely thrilled about signing him even a few months ago . But Guardiola’s arrival at City spooked them”.
The former Red Devil’s comments will lead you to believe that United may have wanted Guardiola, but it also hints that possibly Ed Woodward felt under pressure after City clinched the Ex-Bayern manger, and forcing him to take a gamble and go for the maverick Mourinho .
As weird as it will be for soccer fans to see the former Chelsea boss in the home dug out in Old Trafford, for Mourinho, this job is huge.
As much of the talk we hear that the Portuguese manager has always had an affiliation and respect for the club, that does not matter to Jose right now.
He’s taking the job to make a point, to redeem his aura of being one of the best managers in the world and retain his incredible record.
Mourinho would not mind hearing rumours that the club did not have him as their first choice, if anything it will drive the 53 year old to prove them wrong, re-announcing himself as the special one.
