Manchester United Fan Favourite Juan Mata Told By Mourinho To Stay [Report]

Juan Mata

José Mourinho has apparently told Spanish midfielder and fan favourite Juan Mata that he would like him to stay and fight for his place at Manchester United.

When Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal in May, it was quickly assumed that one of the first names to be cut from the team sheet would be that of Mata. Sensationally sold to United by the then Chelsea boss Mourinho back in 2014 for a tidy £37.1 million, everyone assumed that he would once again cash in on the Spain international.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Mourinho has, according to the Sun, told the 28-year-old midfielder that he has a future at United but that he would have to fight for his place in the starting 11.

Competition from the likes of Wayne Rooney, Adnan Januzaj, Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay as well as new signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will see likely result in Mata featuring in only one of three games, according to reports.

With 21 goals in 86 games for United since his arrival at Old Trafford, fans have taken a real shine to the former Chelsea player and were, until now, lamenting the expected fate that was set to befall him.

With Mourinho now offering Mata the chance to remain on as part of a squad rotation policy, it looks like the player – who has often expressed his love for the club and his desire to remain – shall get his wish and become part of Mourinho’s title plans once more.
