Manchester United’s young Uruguayan full back Guillermo Varela has joined Real Madrid on loan it has been confirmed by the club’s official website.
The young full back is expected to link up with Real Madrid’s Castilla side under the tutelage of Zinedine Zidane.
The Uruguayan was David Moyes’s first signing after the full back impressed at the u20 World Cup in the summer of 2013. Varela has not featured for the first team but has impressed at U21 level for Manchester United.
The young full back signed a five-year-deal just last summer after arriving from Atletico Penarol for an undisclosed fee. He is now likely to feature in the Segunda division, Spain’s equivalent to the Championship in England.
The youngster is thought to have found it difficult to settle in England and at the age of 21 he will look to play football at a higher level than the u21 Premier League.
The Segunda division in Spain will be a step up for the young Uruguayan who has looked a decent prospect for Manchester United and with Rafael out through injury it is perhaps surprising that the young right back is leaving in a loan deal.
Fellow Manchester United player Javier Hernandez has also joined Real Madrid in a loan deal and both clubs have dealt with each other in a number of transfers during this window with the signing of Angel Di Maria being the one of the most high profile signing’s this summer.
Varela had been linked with a move to Madrid in the last number of days and now United have confirmed that he has joined in a loan deal. United have also sent Tom Cleverley, Wilifried Zaha, Nick Powell and Hernandez away on loan deal.
It is thought that Louis Van Gaal wants to work with a small squad with no European football to contend with this year. Antonio Valencia and Rafael when fit are set to compete for a right wing back role following the departure of Varela to Madrid.
