Jose Mourinho and Manchester United are busy planning for the new campaign with rumours abound of incomings and outgoings at Old Trafford this summer.
Reports, however, have emerged from Spain that rumoured £54 million transfer target Saul Niguez has pledged his immediate future to his current club, Atletico Madrid.
He told AS, as reported in The Manchester Evening News:
“I’m fine in Madrid, I play often and I’m happy. Atletico is the club where I intend to stay.
“I would have liked to have been called up by Del Bosque but for me it was already an award to be in the preliminary squad. Now I have to work hard with Atletico because sooner or later my chance will come.”
Niguez played a starring role this season as Atletico Madrid went all the way to the Champions League final in Milan, where for the second time in three seasons they lost out to arch rivals Real Madrid.
Saul clearly feels he is at the right club for him – a club where he can play Champions League football, something Manchester United currently cannot offer, and if he continues his form into next season he can play himself into the thoughts of Del Bosque with the qualifying for World Cup 2018 due to begin this autumn.
Manchester United and Paris St-Germain were said to be interested in acquiring the services of the highly-rated 21-year-old, and as current manager Diego Simeone ponders over his future at Atletico Madrid, Saul’s commitment to the club will come as a timely boost for Atletico.
Mourinho and United will now most likely have to turn their attentions elsewhere as the new era at Old Trafford begins to take shape.
