While Alvaro Morata has recently been touted as Manchester United’s main forward target this summer, it now looks as though Romelu Lukaku could be the man to fill the boots of the departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The BBC report that the Belgium international has ’emerged as a candidate’ for United in their pursuit of a world-class goalscorer.
While Chelsea appeared for the majority of this summer to be frontrunners for his signature this deal could well materialise given that United veteran Wayne Rooney is said to be on the verge of a return to his former stomping ground, Goodison Park, which would surely work in the Old Trafford club’s favour should they wish to trash out a deal.
Why United and other Premier League heavyweights would fork out tens of millions for the striker is abundantly clear too, with the former Anderlecht man having netted 25 league goals last term, earning him a place in the PFA Team of the Year while he was also voted as the Toffees’ Player of the Year.
Adding fuel to the fire of a potential move is the fact that Mino Raiola is the 24-year-old’s agent. The man whose clients include some of United’s biggest acquisitions in recent times, including world record signing Paul Pogba as well as Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Having spent three years at Chelsea Lukaku could yet choose to move back to the capital, but with Rooney likely to swap clubs and Raiola involved United fans may very well have one of last season’s sharpest shooters on their books come the start of the season. Time will tell.
