Manchester United Boss To Use Midfielder As Centre Half

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is set to use experienced midfielder Michael Carrick as a defender in an effort to shore up a defence that has struggled so far this season.

The 33-year-old is currently out of action with an ankle injury but is expected to return in the next number of weeks and now, according to the Express, the veteran midfielder could be set to play in a new defensive role.

The former Tottenham midfielder is an accomplished distributor of the ball and would give United an option to build attacks from the back, however he has very little experience of playing in that role against some of the best attackers in world football.

The former West ham midfielder is thought to have had conversations with Louis Van Gaal about the possibility of playing in a new role and it is perhaps an error by the Dutch manager that he failed to sign a world class centre half that is needed to shore up a defence that looks to be lacking in adequate quality.

Carrick did play as a defender last season under David Moyes reign as manager with the 33-year-old performing admirably against West Ham striker Andy Carroll.

The former United boss praised Carrick’s contribution as a defender in the game.

“Michael did great at centre-half. He’s played there before so it wasn’t a problem.

“We even considered putting (Marouane) Fellaini back there as well, so I think we’ve got people who can do that if we have to.

“It was great that the squad mucked in and that’s the way it should be, when you are short in areas and it’s all hands to the pumps.

“We were short on Saturday and Michael certainly played really well.”

Carrick however could struggle against pacey attackers, as the midfielder is not noted for his athletic prowess but with Louis Van Gaal now short of quality in the centre half position the 33-year-old would offer more experience and leadership at the back.
