Manchester United fans will be speculating over the possibility of Colombian captain James Rodriguez joining the club this summer, after Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane admitted that his team’s squad size made James’s inclusion ‘complicated’.
Rodriguez joined the club from Monaco in 2014 and enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in Spain, but he fell out of favour with both Rafa Benitez and Zidane last season.
After long spells warming the substitutes bench in Madrid, Zidane’s decision not to bring on Rodriguez in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid appeared to be the final nail in the coffin of the 25-year-old’s Los Blancos career.
Media have linked the player with a move to England in recent weeks, with Marca claiming that Manchester United are one of three sides vying to sign Rodriguez, and Zidane’s comments have suggested he will have to leave to find regular first-team football.
“The idea with James is the same as with everyone else – he’s a Real Madrid player,” said Zidane.
“I’m not going to tell you that James is a starter. He’s an important player. We’ll see what happens this year, I have a big squad and it’s complicated.”
Manchester United have already signed Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but the club are also trying to complete a £100m deal to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus as well as eyeing up a move for Rodriguez.
With players such as Anthony Martial and David de Gea already committed to the club, should Pogba and Rodriguez arrive to join Jose Mourinho’s Old Trafford revolution, United will not only be a threat in the Premier League but in Europe too.
However, the absence of Champions League football is a stumbling block, but one can expect the Red Devils to attain a place in the competition for the 2017/18 season.
Will James join United?
