Jose Mourinho is making the final touches to his Manchester United squad ahead of the conclusion to the transfer window next Wednesday.
The Portuguese tactician has been adding both defensive and offensive reinforcements since his appointment earlier in the summer, with a number of impressive acquisitions being made at Old Trafford.
Eric Bailly was the first to arrive from Villareal in a £30 million deal, followed soon after by Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
After lengthy negotiations, Henrikh Mkhitaryan became the third signing of the Mourinho era.
And in what was surely the most drawn out transfer in football history, Paul Pogba finally (we can’t stress that enough) rejoined the club in a world record transfer deal.
Paddy McNair, Donald Love, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Tyler Blackett have since departed United, with Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo expected to follow the quartet out of the exit door.
Thus, it is fully expected that Mourinho would strengthen with the signing of another defender to provide increased competition for Bailly, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind.
Jose Fonte of Southampton is the man believed to have been identified by many in the media to become the fifth new man to put pen to paper, but if Le 10 Sport are to believed, Paris Saint-Germain’s incredible prospect Marquinhos is the player Mourinho wants to finish his shopping for the summer.
The French media outlet’s claim appears to have been supported by the Telegraph, who have included the news in their transfer column (10.38 am).
The Daily Star have also seemingly backed the story.
Such a transfer would break the world transfer record for a defender at €55m (£46.7m) which is currently held by his Paris team-mate, David Luiz.
Marquinhos is already seventh on the list of most expensive defenders by transfer fee following his £27m move to France from Roma in 2013.
Regardless of the extortionate fee he would command, it is evident that the Brazilian is one of the football’s brightest young talents at just 22.
Having just returned from the Rio Olympics with his gold medal, the centre-back may need time to recover, but considering the fact that United have been linked with the player for such a long time it would certainly not be a surprise to see Marquinhos in a Manchester United shirt by the end of the month.
Le 10 Sport believe however that Mourinho’s outfit would have to rival Premier League rivals Chelsea and Catalan giants Barcelona for his signature.
The Telegraph also point out that after signing a player of the same age in Bailly, a more experienced option could be preferred.
