Manchester United And Chelsea Set To Miss Out On Defender [Report]

Manchester United and Chelsea are busy preparing for the new campaign with both clubs looking to make up for disappointing seasons last time out, having installed new managers in their respective hot seats since.

While José Mourinho and Antonio Conte have already added to their squads, one player linked with both clubs now looks set to stay with his current team.

The Daily Star is reporting that Greece international defender Kostas Manolas will remain on at Roma despite his agent Ioannis Evangelopoulos declaring interest in his client from both United and Chelsea in recent days.

However, the player’s manager at Roma, Luciano Spalletti, insists his star defender is going nowhere as he aims to stop the Juventus’ dominance of Serie A in recent seasons.

Speaking on the media speculation, Spalletti said: “In my opinion, and especially for those who are here, it is easy to see that there are no problems.

“Manolas is a good footballer, like there are many good footballers, and so it can happen that he will be linked in the transfer market – indeed it is inevitable.

“But his intentions are clear, so there are no issues.

“Why not talk instead about the problem of writing about issues that are not there? Manolas will stay with us.”

However, the player’s agent seemed to welcome the interest in his client and his comments will offer encouragement to admirers of Manolas. Speaking to the media in the last few days, Evangelopoulos stated:

“The best clubs in Europe want him. There isn’t just Manchester City, but also United and Chelsea.

“I haven’t spoken with Roma for a while.

“Will he remain in the capital? No comment.”

This may be a ploy by Evangelopoulos to get an improved contract for his client at Roma. However, if the 25-year-old continues to impress it will prove difficult for the Italians to hold onto their star player for much longer.
