According to Express, Man Utd are leading the chase for Zenit St Petersburg’s 6ft 1in unit Ezequiel Garay.
The Argentinian moved to Russia from Benfica two years ago, but the centre-back has far too much talent in abundance to remain in an admittedly sub-standard league.
Garay, 29, has attracted attention from United’s bitter rivals Arsenal, whilst Tuttosport have also reported that Inter Milan are keen, following Chelsea’s interest in their £20m rated Colombian defender Jeison Muirillo.
However, with Inter being forced to make up the £39m deficit in order to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, a move for Garay from El Nerazzurri seems unlikely, leaving Manchester United and Arsenal as the frontrunners.

The Red Devils are in need of a physical presence to partner Chris Smalling at the back and Garay is the perfect candidate. At the same time, Arsene Wenger has an ageing centre-back in Per Mertesacker, and Calum Chambers is quite injury prone, so both clubs are in need of a quality addition to their defensive regiment.
However, with Jose Mourinho is now in charge at Old Trafford, and quite like his predecessor, is not afraid to splash the cash.
It’s not set in stone by any means, though, and it looks likely both teams will fight bitterly to recruit Garay before the season begins in August.
