It’s been heavily reported that Manchester United were interested in tempting Bayern Munich frontman Thomas Muller to Old Trafford this summer, however now an altogether different Bayern target has emerged.
Dutch daily De Telegraaf, who have in the past broken the stories of Louis van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford as well as Memphis Depay’s signing, claim that a £73 million move for Arjen Robben is in the pipeline.
The fee in question would make Robben United’s record signing having paid £59.7 million for Angel Di Maria in August of last year.
Having already signed Bastian Schweinsteiger from the Bavarian outfit as well as trying to poach Muller, it now looks as though Van Gaal is still trying to use his past relationships at Bayern to tempt some of the world’s top talent to Old Trafford.
Robben has also played under the United boss for the Netherlands, so the 31-year-old could theoretically fit seamlessly into Van Gaal’s plans as the pair have such a good understanding of one another.
Although this story’s source is reliable, going by some past transfer news, it is hard to believe that Bayern will want to ship two of their most talented midfielders in the same window to the same club, who they could potentially face in the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.
If this deal does come to fruition however, then United will have one of the world’s greatest wingers at their disposal. It would also add some depth in wide areas and added competition for the likes of Adnan Januzaj, Ashley Young and Memphis Depay.
