Maguire’s last Preston appearance came against Aston Villa on the 1st of November, before suffering a hamstring injury that has ruled him out ever since. Prior to that disruption he had made a strong start to hie return to English football, scoring four goals and setting up three more in 12 league games (and picking up four man of the match awards in the process).
Internationally, the injury came just weeks after the 23-year-old had finally forced his way into the Ireland senior squad, coming off the bench for the final ten minutes of a World Cup qualifier against Moldova. Maguire’s return to action is particularly timely given the fact that Martin O’Neill will name his Ireland squad for this month’s international friendly with Turkey next week.
Whether Maguire will be in the squad or not remains to be seen (as it might have come too soon for him in his recovery), but his comeback is still very positive news for the Boys in Green.
