Louis Van Gaal has dropped a major hint that Manchester United may move for a striker in January, after the Red Devils played out a fifth 0-0 draw in the last nine games yesterday. The Old Trafford faithful were unhappy with the Dutchman as boos rang out around the Theatre of Dreams after yesterday’s stalemate with West Ham.
However, one major positive remains that they are not conceding goals. Michael Owen stated the obvious yesterday in saying that you can’t win games without scoring. Equally, you can’t lose games without conceding. United’s defence has been watertight, but nonetheless, the strikers will have to get their act together.
Yesterday, LVG was quizzed by a BBC reporter if they would be scoring goals if Sergio Aguero or Luis Suarez were in the team.
“That is a question mark. You never know. I think they would, though.
“We’ve created enough chances to score, so that was not the problem.
“The most important thing is you dominate, create and you finish. Football is about scoring goals. The first two basic aspects of football we have done.
“When you don’t finish from a metre in front of an empty goal, you cannot say anything more. You have to finish and that’s the only problem we have. We played very well especially in the second half – but you have to finish.”
The fact that LVG is openly admitting that they lack firepower up front would suggest that they are set to make a big signing this January. Who they will sign is another question, and neither Suarez nor Aguero will be making a move to United this winter.
However, the first step to solving a problem is admitting that there is a problem. Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial have not been scoring enough to put it simply.
Manchester United fans may be in for a treat in the New Year.
