Last season, Liverpool struggled in front of goal which led to them finishing a disappointing 6th in the league. The main reason for this disappointment was due to their lack of striking options as they played a huge amount of the season without any quality strikers. Star striker Sturridge was injured for most of the season, Balotelli missed many games due to illness and injuries, while Borini and Lambert failed to impress.
Liverpool will have Divock Origi and Danny Ings arriving in time for the new season but Borini, Lambert and Balotelli are still expected to leave Anfield, which leaves space for another striker or even two if they show enough ambition. The club have been linked with a number of options but no official bids have been made as of yet. Let’s take a look at the strikers that may be available this summer.
The Argentinian recently lost the Champions League final with Juventus to Barcelona but the striker still managed to have a wonderful season with the Italian champions. Juventus won the Serie A and the Coppa Italia while Tevez managed to score 29 goals in all competitions last season. The striker also created 8 assists, won 9 Man of the Match awards and had a successful passing rate of 84.5%.
The Daily Express reported on Tuesday that Brendan Rodgers is interested in the striker who could go for as little as £10m. Although, Sky Sports reported on Monday that a Premier League side were in for Tevez but it was not Liverpool. This report seems to be more truthful, as FSG’s policy is to bring in young players with low or average wage demands, but Tevez is 31, and is known for having high wage demands. The striker is also known for not enjoying life in England during his time in Manchester. Tevez has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid – which looks like a possible deal this summer.
Vietto seems like a more likely FSG target as he is only 21 and wouldn’t demand high wages. The striker was a surprise package in the La Liga in the 14/15 season, as he scored 20 goals in 48 appearances including 12 league goals. The Argentinian is quick, skillful, loves to dribble and is known for taking long range shots. Last season, the striker created 6 assists, won 3 Man of the Match awards and had a successful passing rate of 74.3%.
Liverpool were linked with the young striker at the end of May, but the Daily Star reported that they would have competition from Arsenal and Atletico Madrid. The striker has a release cause rumoured to be worth around £14m, but it doesn’t look good for Premier League sides as it is also rumoured that Vietto favours a move to Atletico.
Bacca shone in the Europa League final recently which has led to the Colombian being linked to many top sides in Europe. Last season, the striker scored 29 goals in all competitions including 20 league goals, while he also created 9 assists and won 5 Man of the Match awards. Liverpool should really make a tempting offer to Sevilla and the player – as he is a complete striker with exceptional finishing abilities – which is exactly what they need up front.
Liverpool haven’t been heavily linked to the striker in the press, but they should consider an attempt to bring Bacca to Anfield. Although, if they are even considering making an offer for Bacca, then they need to move quickly as he is being monitored by Manchester United and Roma, while the press have reported this week that the player wants to move to Serie A.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Benteke since the end of the 14/15 season, but whether they will actually splash the cash on the Belgian is yet to be seen as they haven’t made any official offers. Last season, the striker scored 15 goals in all competitions including 13 league goals while he also created 2 assists and won 3 Man of the Match awards. The Belgian was heroic for Villa in their survival attempt last season while he also helped them reach the FA Cup final. The striker is good in the air, physically strong and has a lethal shot as well as a keen eye for goal.
Although, the striker is known for being inconsistent as he often has games where he doesn’t make an impact such as their FA Cup final loss to Arsenal, and it’s hard to say whether he would fit into Liverpool’s style of play. Liverpool don’t need that uncertainty up front as they struggled last season with strikers, and they would be crazy to pay the £32m that Villa are rumoured to be looking for.
It was last month that Harry Redknapp urged Liverpool to make a move for QPR star Charlie Austin, but this week The Express have reported that Liverpool could actually have concrete interest in the striker. Last season, Austin scored an impressive 15 goals and created 5 assists in the Premier League, while looking like a player that was too good for a doomed QPR side. Austin is a classic striker that loves to get into good positions, is great in the air, loves to shoot and has plenty of skill.
Recently, Austin was linked with a move to Newcastle but the move hasn’t progressed since then and this has led to more Premier League clubs showing interest in the 25 year old. Austin may have shone for QPR last season, but at £15m would it be a good enough signing to get the Liverpool fans excited for next season, or should they be looking for a top quality marquee signing?
