According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are in talks to sign former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer as the former Barcelona keeper is now a free agent.
The 32-year-old Catalan suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in March and is not expected to be fit until December. The former Barcelona man would offer Liverpool a vast amount of experience having won the Champions League three times with Barcelona.
It would see Liverpool with two top quality keepers and provide competition for the current number one Simon Mignolet. Valdes made over 500 appearances for Barcelona winning La Liga six times along with three Champions Leagues.
The net minder had been tipped to join Monaco in the summer but the cruciate injury he suffered in March saw Monaco’s interest cool. Brendan Rodgers is believed to be looking at a goalkeeper and with recent target Alex McCarthy set to join QPR for £6m, Valdes could now be Liverpool’s last bit of business in this transfer window.
With Valdes now likely to join the Reds there is also set to a number of departures as Brendan Rodgers looks to trim his squad with a number of players surplus to requirements.
Fabio Borini could leave on deadline day and Sunderland have been keen on the Italian all summer after he impressed at the Stadium of Light last season. Brendan Rodgers spoke about the forward a few days ago.
I think Fabio’s situation is clear. All the players who there have been doubts about know exactly where they are at.
“Fabio has got a move there to Sunderland which has been ongoing for a number of weeks. He knows where he stands in terms of his position here at Liverpool.
“For him, it’s best to move on and get playing regularly. But that’s something he has to decide.”
Sunderland manager Gus Poyet remains hopeful of a deal for the 23-year-old and has been keen to sign the striker all summer. A £14m fee had reportedly been agreed between the clubs earlier in the summer, but the player himself has not yet made a decision.
“Now I keep it open because he’s still a Liverpool player, and maybe he can still become a Sunderland player.
“Yes, I still want him. I know Fabio. I am a believer that when you know the player and you know what you get, and you are convinced that is the right player with the right mentality, I’ll wait whatever is needed for a player like that.
Sebastian Coates is also set to leave Liverpool and join Sunderland on a loan deal, according to The Mail. The Uruguayan defender has struggled for first team football at Anfield and compatriot Gus Poyet is keen to acquire the defender.
Liverpool look set to bring in Victor Valdes but there could also be a number of departures as Brendan Rodgers looks to offload some players who are not part of his plans for the season. It’s going to be a busy day for the Reds boss.
