Liverpool, PSG On High Alert As Higuain Says He Won’t Renew Contract

News is emerging from Italy that Napoli goalscoring machine Gonzalo Higuain has rejected a new contract extension with the Serie A club.

The subject of intense speculation early in the transfer window, Higuain has been a player of interest for Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, in addition to French giants PSG.

However, after it emerged that Napoli were set to offer an improved contract to the Argentina international, stories of potential Premier League offers died down as the European Championships kicked off.

Now, as reported in Marca, Higuain has spurned Napoli’s offer, paving the way for Arsene Wenger, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp to renew their interest in the prolific goalscorer.

With 36 goals in 35 games last season for the Italian club, the 27-year-old has become one of the most sought after players in Europe. However, with a supposed release clause of some €94.7 million, many clubs are simply not capable of considering a move for the Argentine.

Lucrative television rights contracts have seen the Premier League become the richest in the world and top flight clubs are now in a position to approach pretty much anyone.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, PSG are also monitoring the situation closely as they see the striker as an ideal replacement for Manchester United-bound Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, the same report says the club have balked at paying such a large fee for ‘Pipita’.

In recent weeks Liverpool boss Klopp has reportedly been spotted with Higuain’s brother and agent, Nicolas, at a Copa America game. While this might suggest the Merseyside club are leading the charge for the forward’s signature, it is unclear whether Liverpool could afford the transfer fee.

As for Chelsea and Arsenal, it is believed that they are better placed to afford the Napoli star but as of yet there is nothing to suggest a move for the player.

For now it looks like a case of watch this space.
