Liverpool & Manchester United Stoke Target ‘Keeping His Options Open’

David de Gea’s future at Manchester United is largely uncertain at present with Real Madrid said to be preparing a bid for the Spaniard.

This has increased speculation as to who may replace him between the United sticks. Among the candidates is Petr Cech, but following Stoke City’s chief executive Tony Scholes’ comments to The Sentinel, there looks to be a slight chance that Asmir Begovic could be the next goalkeeper through the door at Old Trafford.

“We would very much like him to extend his contract but I think Asmir has said it himself, he is keeping his options open and seeing what might be available for him, Scholes said.

“If I’m speaking frankly, I don’t know who he might be speaking to. That’s not accusing him of anything, it’s just saying that’s the reality. My hope is that he decides that we are the best option for him and that he extends his contract.

“He’s away at the moment but we hope to sit down with Asmir and his representatives again in the near future and it would be nice if we could sort something out.”

Although Scholes doesn’t explicitly state that Begovic is going anywhere, or staying for that matter, the fact that major Premier League forces such as Liverpool and Manchester United are being linked with his services may well turn his head.

The Bosnia goalkeeper has just one year remaining on his current deal, so it looks as though the Potters are tasked with a tough choice of selling this summer for a transfer fee or letting him go on a free next year.

Begovic is one of the top flight’s best stoppers and at 27 he has plenty of time left in his career to make an impact at a bigger club. Whether he does so in the future looks to be entirely up to him.
