Liverpool are monitoring the contract situation of Santos star Thiago Maia.

As reported by ESPN Brazil, the midfielder is in high demand, with Monaco, Napoli and Schalke all reportedly interested in acquiring his services as well.

In fact, Zenit St. Petersburg have already had an €18 million bid rejected for the youngster, while Napoli have tabled an offer in the order of €12 million.

The midfielder has commented on the speculation, but is giving little away.

“I’m on vacation, it’s been a lot of work, but a very important year in my career,” he said.

“I was an Olympic champion and, in Santos, we had a regular season, the São Paulo title and the Brazilian runner-up. The Saints and my representatives decide if it’s time for a transfer.

“If it’s to stay, the supporter can rest easy, I want to repeat the good season, play Libertadores and be a champion.”

It is unclear how the deep-lying midfielder would fit into the Reds’ current starting XI. Should he ultimately make the move to Anfield, he would likely be deployed as backup for Emre Can or Lucas initially, before hoping to establish himself in later years.

However, Liverpool will likely need to trump the bids already tabled by other clubs to secure his services. Until such a move is officially made, this is still a deal Liverpool are a long way from finalising.
