Liverpool’s Hopes Of Signing Naby Keita In January Are Killed Off

Naby Keita

Liverpool’s hopes of signing RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita in January have been firmly put to bed by the Bundesliga side.

Liverpool have already agreed a £60m+ deal to bring the 22-year-old to Anfield in August, but speculation had been mounting that they would be able to bring the move forward if they paid an extra fee to get the deal over the line this month.

Indeed, there had been whispers that Saturday’s clash with Schalke – a match that Keita actually scored in – would be his last before making his move to the Premier League.

However, RB Leipzig director of football has shut down that talk once and for all, by confirming that Keita will remain in Germany until the end of June.

The news will be a blow for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who had wanted Keita to come in and provided greater midfield urgency and creativity after last week’s departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona. That said, the Reds can take comfort in the knowledge that the Guinean international will still join the club, albeit on July 1st.

Despite the major financial windfall from the sale of Coutinho, Klopp is reportedly unlikely to replace the Brazilian playmaker in this transfer window, preferring instead to wait until the summer when a greater selection of targets will be available.
